Toronto is a world-class city when it comes to the food scene and it’s full of incredible, plant-based restaurants however there is only one, true, fine dining plant-based spot in this city and that is Avelo, part of the Awai Hospitality Group that’s owned by Roger Yang.
Located on a quiet side-street downtown in a Victorian heritage townhouse built in the 1880s, the interior architecture and design are simply gorgeous and ahh-inducing. From the domed ceilings and lush velvet seating in the second floor ‘speakeasy’ bar lounge to the sumptuous wall murals throughout the space, it’s like dining in an art gallery. But let’s get real, the ultimate test is in the food and here is where Avelo really shines.
Under the more than capable hands of Chef Fernando Anrango, they offer five and eight-course tasting menus, which can be accompanied by wine pairings created by none other than Master Sommelier Jennifer Huether (VineRoutes special contributor) – so one should expect the food and wine experience to be spot-on!
The food (oh the glorious food!) is simply phenomenal and had Toronto Life raving “There’s usually at least one life-altering plate” on their Best New Restaurants list of 2020. Their menu changes seasonally and the dishes are dreamy, inventive, visually stunning and delicious. In fact, I would rate my meal there as one of the top three of my life. The service is impeccable, being at once attentive without pestering. Best of all, their prices are reasonable, certainly far less than one might expect for such an exceptional experience.
Conde Nast said of Avelo “With such an inviting atmosphere, great culture of service, and inventive menu, Avelo is a plant-based restaurant that even carnivores can get behind.” I couldn’t agree more. This is a spot you’ll want to book for your next special occasion or better yet, to make any occasion special. – Contributed by Priya Rao
