The Canadian Association of Professional Sommeliers (CAPS) Ontario chapter is once again inviting sommeliers, wine professionals and enthusiasts alike to put their blind tasting skills to the test in the 2025 CAPS Cup Challenge. Taking place simultaneously across three cities—Toronto, Ottawa, and Niagara—on Tuesday, September 23 at 1:00 PM, this annual competition celebrates the art of tasting, analysis, and professional wine service in a fun, unpretentious environment.
The CAPS Cup is designed to challenge participants’ sensory abilities through blind tasting, where wines are assessed without prior knowledge of the label. It’s a test not only of technical knowledge but also of palate precision, intuition, and confidence. Last year’s event drew some of the province’s most talented sommeliers, offering both seasoned professionals and emerging voices in the industry a chance to shine.
This year, the challenge will be hosted at three venues across Ontario:
Toronto: Vintage Conservatory, 224 King St. W.
Ottawa: Gitanes, 361 Elgin St. Unit #6
Niagara: Rosewood Estates Winery, 4352 Mountainview Rd., Lincoln
With just 15 spots available per location, the competition remains an intimate but spirited affair. Participants must be CAPS Ontario members, at least 19 years of age, and can register in advance for $25.
The CAPS Cup Challenge has become a cornerstone event for Ontario’s sommelier community, providing a platform for professionals to showcase their expertise, connect with peers, and celebrate the province’s thriving wine culture. Winners from each city will be announced shortly after the event, with bragging rights—and recognition within the community—on the line.
