With the summer sunshine in full swing, there’s never been a better time to book a visit to wine country. Lucky for us, you don’t have to travel far for a world-class experience with coveted regions like Niagara-On-The-Lake right in our backyard.
The Niagara region is a figure in the Canadian wine and food scene, but with so much to choose from where do you start? I’ve rounded up some of my favourite spots that make for the perfect day in Niagara:
RPM Bakehouse
Start the day off right by stopping into RPM Bakehouse, the hottest new bakery from the coveted Pearl Morissette restaurant and winery. The bakery is right in the heart of Jordan Village, making for the ultimate pit stop to keep your heart and bellies full before heading to the many wineries in the Niagara region. Enjoy baked goods crafted to perfection such as fresh sourdough, sweet and savoury pastries, house juices, coffee from Canadian roasters and the best of Pearl Morissette wine.
13th Street
Art, wine and pastries…need we say more? 13th Street winery is a Jordan gem that boasts an incredible selection of homegrown wines to the backdrop of unique sculptures and an art gallery full of pieces from Canadian artists. The stunning property has a charm that makes you feel like you’ve stepped into a scene of Alice in Wonderland and they happen to sell the best butter tarts you’ll ever taste! Stroll around the property to take in the art and sit down for a tasting with a butter tart in hand. You won’t regret it!
Stratus
No visit to Niagara is complete without stopping into the iconic Stratus Winery. Stratus was deemed Canada’s first LEED-certified facility and is known for its commitment to sustainably produced wines of outstanding quality. The winery’s airy, modern and minimalist design speaks for itself and the wines are among the best in the region. Relax on the terrace for a tasting or enjoy a more elevated and educational experience in the Tasting Room…the world is your oyster!
Southbrook
Do organic and natural wines pique your interest? If so, look no further than Southbrook Organic Vineyards. From Pet Nat to Cabernet Franc Rosé, Orange wine and Gamay, Southbrook is a figure for certified organic and biodynamic wines that taste as good as they look. The winery represents the innovation happening right in the heart of Niagara and is not to be missed.
Kitchen 76 at Two Sisters Estate Vineyard
After a wine-filled day, it’s the perfect time for lunch. Insert Kitchen 76 at the gorgeous Two Sisters Estate & Vineyards! Indulge in Italian-inspired fare made with produce from local farmers and sit out on the terrace with a glass of Two Sisters wine in hand. From Arancini to wood-oven pizzas and fresh pastas, you can’t go wrong with a menu this right.
Big Head
Big things are happening at Big Head. Known for their portfolio of intense, big reds, the winery is starting a new chapter with the opening of its new space and introduction of innovative wines to the portfolio. With a wide range of wines from bigger reds to their latest “raw” collection, a visit to Big Head is the perfect way to cap off the day.
The Oaklands at Riverbend Inn
After a quick rest, it’s time for dinner and no dinner in wine country is complete without sunset over the vineyards. Reserve the terrace at The Oaklands at Riverbend Inn for a meal and view worthy of a toast. With a curated menu by the infamous Chef Ross Midgley, every dish has been carefully defined based on what’s in season, paired with a wine list reflective of the entire region.
Woodbourne Inn
Rest your head at the Woodbourne Inn, a 1839 Historically designated treasure for the icing on the cake of your dream getaway. The property is full of elegant Victorian lounge areas, spacious rooms and a gorgeous backyard with a fire pit. Head back to the hotel after dinner to sit by the fire with a bottle from your favourite winery and toast to the day in true Niagara style.
So, what are you waiting for? Gather your favourite people and book your stay in wine country. Consider your next summer stay, sorted.
