Liberty Entertainment Group debuts ‘DaNico’ in Toronto

September 15, 2023

Lovers of gastronomy and renowned Michelin-inspired dining will delight at this bespoke food and wine experience

Toronto’s restaurant scene has seen a significant boost in popularity over the last 18 months. With the pandemic in rear view and the Michelin Guide making its long-awaited debut in the city last fall, food and wine culture in this city is at an all-time high. So, the timing couldn’t be more perfect for Canada’s Liberty Entertainment Group to launch its newest 60-seat intimate dining concept, DaNico.

Set within an old heritage bank building at 440 College St. West, in downtown Toronto, VineRoutes was invited to an exclusive pre-opening night cocktails and dinner event featuring friends of the house and select media. The restaurant opened for normal business on September 15.

Conceived with a nod to Michelin styled cuisine, service and award-winning design, DaNico showcases the acclaimed talent of superstar – and Michelin starred – executive chef Daniele Corona of Don Alfonso 1890 Toronto, and was created in partnership with international hospitality icon, Nick Di Donato of Liberty Group, multi-starred chef Ernesto Iaccarino of the Don Alfonso 1890 Group, and chef Corona.

DaNico’s interior design is by the award-winning Nadia Di Donato, who thoughtfully selected every detail, piece of furniture and curated works of art.

“Opening DaNico is truly my dream realized,” says Corona. “The concept embodies my culinary journey – from Italy, and under the mentorship of the Iaccarino family in the Amalfi Coast, through the evolution to what inspires my cooking today. Here, I can create my own interpretation of internationally inspired, award-winning cuisine. I am both proud and honoured to welcome my esteemed guests to share my vision unveiled.”

Corona’s edgy approach to his signature menu displays an exuberant freedom and focuses on the modern Italian culinary tradition for which he is regarded, combining modern Asian influences and utilizing the best local and sustainable ingredients available in the country. A playful dish that combines micro tortellini stuffed with Ontario lamb braised in barbera wine, caramelized red onion, smoked eel and fresh mint shows his rigorous classicism; the Japanese A5 Wagyu tenderloin from Miyazaki prefecture marinated 12 hours and gently charcoal grilled with shishito pepper potato terrine testifies to the pleasure he takes in Asian indulgence.

DaNico’s wine cellar contains 3,000, mostly Italian, wine bottles.

The entire eight course signature tasting menu of distinctively crafted dishes is plated on one-of-a-kind serving vessels, designed to tell a story of the food in a most breathtaking presentation. This eclectic approach, of course, extends to the restaurant’s carefully curated wine list from DaNico’s noteworthy repository. Mostly Italian in scope (with about a five percent Canadian selection along with a variety of favoured French, California and other international notables), the original bank vault that now acts as DaNico’s cellar boasts more than 3,000 bottles.

Believing that the ultimate restaurant experience should be all-encompassing, DaNico’s interior design juxtaposes classic architecture, heirloom antiques and a modern design aesthetic, all combining to immerse diners in a simply transcendent setting, making for a truly unforgettable, elevated experience.

“With the opening of our second Michelin-style fine dining restaurant, we are more determined than ever in elevating Toronto’s fine-dining community and hospitality scene, so as to be recognized amongst the absolute best in the world,” says Nick Di Donato, CEO of Liberty Group. “We believe DaNico is the pinnacle of Toronto’s dining scene – now on the global stage.”

Bookings are now open online for dinner service Wednesday – Sunday evenings.
