VineRoutes contributing editor Gillian Marks, PhD., earns prestigious Bordeaux Masters Certification

August 25, 2025

VineRoutes is proud to announce that contributing editor Gillian Marks, PhD. has officially earned the coveted Bordeaux Masters certification, awarded by the Wine Scholar Guild. With this achievement, Marks joins an elite group of just 158 individuals worldwide who can claim the distinguished title of Bordeaux Master.

The Bordeaux Masters program is recognized as one of the most rigorous and comprehensive studies of the region. Over the course of months, participants engage in live webinars and expert-led sessions covering everything from geology, topography, and grape selection to the complexities of Bordeaux’s historic classification systems, En Primeur pricing and distribution models, and the impact of climate change on the region’s future. The program culminates in a challenging examination of maps, multiple-choice questions, and essays that test both depth and breadth of knowledge.

For Marks, the experience has already changed the way she approaches Bordeaux—both personally and professionally. “As a student of wine and as someone involved in writing about wine, the ability to understand the nuances and changes Bordeaux is facing is invaluable,” she reflects.

She adds that the program offered important context for Bordeaux’s global presence: “The course brings context to the reasoning behind pricing and distribution, which are key factors when buying Bordeaux wine.”

But perhaps most meaningful for Marks is how this certification will shape her role as a communicator and educator. “For me, it’s a chance to teach the essentials of Bordeaux wine in an approachable manner—by lowering the barrier to entry and introducing differences in place through differences in wines,” she says.

Her accomplishment reinforces VineRoutes’ commitment to thoughtful, informed storytelling, ensuring readers gain insider perspectives on one of the world’s most celebrated yet complex wine regions.

Marks has been a contributing editor with VineRoutes since 2022 and, in addition to writing about Bordeaux, has shared insights on California, the Pacific Northwest, Spanish wine and wines from a variety of French regions, including the Loire and Savoie.
