Released ahead of Ontario’s peak wine tourism season, this year’s Top 20 Wineries list celebrates the producers offering the province’s best combination of wine quality, hospitality and visitor experience
VineRoutes has officially unveiled its annual list of Ontario’s Top 20 Wineries for 2026, recognizing the province’s most outstanding winery experiences and wine producers.
The 2026 edition marks the first time the list has been released in late spring, following VineRoutes’ decision to move the announcement from its traditional year-end position to better align with the start of Ontario’s wine tourism season. The revised timing allows wine enthusiasts to use the list as a guide while planning winery visits throughout the summer and fall.
“Our goal has always been to celebrate excellence in Ontario wine while helping consumers discover the very best experiences the province has to offer,” said VineRoutes editor Carmelo Giardina. “By announcing the list at the beginning of the summer season, we hope it becomes a valuable resource for visitors looking to explore Ontario wine country.”
Look back at every past list of Ontario’s Top 20 Wineries
This year’s rankings continue to highlight the depth and diversity of Ontario’s wine industry, with four wineries making the Top 20 for the first time (and one winery making a return to the list after a near three year absence). All four newcomers are located within the Niagara Peninsula, including three wineries from Niagara-on-the-Lake and one from the Niagara Escarpment area.

Since 2023, a total of 14 wineries have made their debut appearance on the list, demonstrating both the continued growth of Ontario’s wine sector and the increasing competitiveness of earning recognition among the province’s top producers.
The 2026 results also mark a notable regional shift. For just the second time since the Top 20 Wineries list was first published in 2020, no winery from the Lake Erie North Shore region appears in the rankings (the only other time was in that inaugural year). VineRoutes looks forward to seeing the region return to representation in future editions as Ontario’s wine landscape continues to evolve.
‘Gold Star’ wineries continue to shrink
Only six wineries have now achieved “Gold Star” status by appearing on all seven editions of the Top 20 Wineries list since its inception in 2020. Last year, nine wineries held that distinction, underscoring the increasingly competitive nature of the annual ranking.
Meanwhile, Thirty Bench has returned to the list after missing the rankings in 2025, bringing its overall total to six appearances in seven years.
Four wineries have now appeared on the list five times since 2020, while two wineries have earned recognition in four of the seven years.
Seven years of recognition
Since the launch of Ontario’s Top 20 Wineries in 2020, 53 wineries have received at least one vote from the VineRoutes panel. Of those, 41 wineries have successfully earned a place on the final Top 20 ranking at least once.
That means approximately 22 percent of Ontario’s wineries have now received Top 20 recognition, highlighting both the breadth of quality across the province and the select nature of the annual list.
How the wineries are evaluated
The VineRoutes panel independently visits and evaluates wineries within a three-year window, ensuring selections reflect sustained excellence rather than one-off impressions.
Wineries are assessed using a comprehensive set of criteria, including:
- Wine quality (most heavily weighted)
- Customer visit experience
- Service excellence
- Facility and ambiance
- Portfolio variety and depth
- Price point and overall value
To qualify, wineries must operate a visitor-facing space.
From modern architectural estates to boutique farm wineries, this year’s selections reflect the full spectrum of what Ontario does best — from terroir-driven cool-climate chardonnay and pinot noir to world-class cabernet franc, méthode traditionnelle sparkling wine, and innovative blends.
