Smart options for the mindful drinker

January 26, 2024

In the ever-evolving landscape of consumer preferences, the spectrum of sobriety is expanding. From the sober-curious to those embracing moderation, the quest for less is reshaping the beverage industry. No and less alcohol wines, projected to grow by 21 percent and 24 percent respectively, are at the forefront of this movement, aligning seamlessly with the changing habits of mindful drinkers.

According to global research company, Wine Intelligence, there’s been a significant surge in the interest surrounding no and less alcohol wines. As consumers increasingly prioritize health and well-being, there’s a growing demand for premium, quality options that don’t compromise on taste. With a projected growth in sales, the wine industry is adapting to meet this demand with innovative offerings that cater to the evolving palate of the modern wine enthusiast.

Leading the charge in this transformative trend for Canadian drinkers is Arterra Wines Canada, where Erika Neudorf, head of innovation, emphasizes the commitment to meeting consumer interests in the growing low-to-no alcohol category. The focus is on ensuring that lighter options don’t skimp on the premium experience wine lovers expect.

“We’re evolving to meet consumers’ interest in this growing category. Quality and taste are top priorities as we continue to innovate by growing our low-to-no sugar, calorie and alcohol options,” she says. “We are excited by the leaps we’re making in the lighter options category and anticipate significant interest in these wines.”

Neudorf anticipates a significant surge of interest in these lighter wines as consumers seek well-crafted alternatives.

As we embrace a softer twist to our beverage choices, low-ABV options promise a spirited journey beyond the festivities, inviting us to savour the moment and elevate our drinking experience. The evolution of the sober-curious movement (aka sober sometimes, moderation-minded or mindful drinker) is not just about saying no; it’s about saying yes to quality, flavour, and a mindful approach to our drinking choices.
