A toast to a pioneer, a builder, and a lasting inspiration whose work elevated Canadian wine to the world stage
Few figures have left as indelible a mark on Canadian wine as Allan Jackson, co-founder of Jackson-Triggs and one of the most influential vintners in this country’s history. His recent passing marks the loss of a visionary whose leadership and dedication helped transform Canada’s wine industry, raising its profile both at home and internationally.
Jackson’s legacy is inextricably tied to his partnership with Don Triggs, with whom he co-founded Jackson-Triggs in 1993. Together, the two men built what would become one of Canada’s most recognizable and respected wineries, a benchmark of quality and consistency that introduced countless Canadians to the world of fine wine.
Their shared vision—to create wines that could stand proudly on the global stage—was a bold statement at a time when Canadian wine was still fighting for recognition. The success of Jackson-Triggs, in many ways, helped pave the way for the growth of Canada’s premium wine industry.
For me, Allan Jackson’s impact is not just something I’ve read about or observed from afar. It is deeply personal. When I was just beginning to get into wine (25 years ago) and wanting to go beyond the bottle, Jackson-Triggs was the first place that showed me behind the curtain, so to speak. It was the very first winery I ever visited and toured, an experience that opened my eyes to the possibilities of locally made, Ontario wine.
I remember those early days vividly—their bold and food-friendly Meritage red blend; the rich, buttered popcorn tasting Chardonnay; a robust and fruity Shiraz. How they became regular purchases, bottles I proudly brought to the table as though sharing a discovery. The winery and its wines gave me an early glimpse of the confidence Ontario had when it came to winemaking.
I’ve returned to Jackson-Triggs several times since those formative years, and each visit feels like a homecoming of sorts. There’s a sense of nostalgia that washes over me whenever I walk through the property—a reminder of how this winery was the starting point of my personal journey into wine. I now realize that Jackson’s vision made that experience possible. What he helped create wasn’t just a brand, but a place of learning, discovery, and inspiration for countless wine lovers like myself.
Arterra Wines Canada, formerly Constellation Brands Canada, paid a fitting tribute to Jackson on their LinkedIn page, writing:
“Few people have shaped the Canadian wine industry as profoundly as Allan Jackson. As one of the founders of Jackson-Triggs and an instrumental force behind what would become Arterra Wines Canada, Allan brought vision, passion, and deep respect for craftsmanship to everything he did.”
“His contributions are part of the foundation of our company and our industry. Allan leaves behind a legacy of excellence that continues to guide us today. He built this legacy alongside his wife Wendy, who also worked with us and shared deeply in his passion for this industry. We are grateful for everything Allan contributed to this community and for the lasting impact he has had on generations of winemakers, viticulturists, and wine lovers. Our thoughts are with Wendy and the entire Jackson family during this difficult time. We hope they find comfort in knowing how many lives Allan touched and how enduring his legacy will be. Allan’s impact will never be forgotten.”
Those words ring true for so many of us who have watched, studied, and enjoyed the results of Allan Jackson’s dedication to his craft. His contributions were not just about building a winery but about creating a culture of excellence, mentorship, and innovation that continues to inspire the Canadian wine industry today.
For those who knew his wines, his work, or simply his influence, Allan Jackson leaves behind more than just bottles and vintages—he leaves behind a legacy that helped shape an entire industry. And for those of us who had our first encounters with Ontario wine through Jackson-Triggs, his impact will always feel deeply personal.
