Renowned Vancouver artist awarded three-month creative residency in Scotland, valued at over $26,000
Glenfiddich, the world’s most awarded single malt Scotch whisky, proudly names Alex Morrison of Vancouver, British Columbia, as the 2025 Canadian recipient of its prestigious Artists in Residence program. Now in its 19th year in Canada, the program offers one exceptional artist an all-expenses-paid, three-month residency at the Glenfiddich Distillery in Dufftown, Scotland — an opportunity valued at over $26,000.
An internationally acclaimed visual artist, Morrison has been active for more than 25 years, with exhibitions across Canada and Europe, including shows at the Contemporary Art Gallery in Vancouver, Levy Delval in Brussels, and Komplot, also in Brussels. His multidisciplinary practice spans painting, sculpture, and ceramics, exploring the social and spatial histories of Canada’s West Coast. His work often blends personal references and historical research, blurring the lines between sculpture, furniture, and décor.
“Thematically, my work focuses on the intersection of heritage, the built environment, and selfhood.” – Alex Morrison
While in Dufftown, Morrison will conduct an architectural design case study focused on Glenfiddich’s historic rooftop pagodas — originally conceptualized by 19th-century architect Charles Doig. Drawing from this iconic element of distillery design, Morrison plans to create a repeating pattern that may be applied to wallpaper, textiles, or packaging, merging his interests in architectural history, placemaking, and visual storytelling.
“Year after year, we’re inspired by the depth of creativity we see from Canadian applicants,” says Andy Fairgrieve, Glenfiddich Artists in Residence Program Curator. “We’re excited to welcome Alex to Dufftown and look forward to seeing how he brings his unique perspective to the distillery’s heritage.”
“I’m incredibly honoured to explore these ideas while immersed in the rich, storied landscape of the Glenfiddich Distillery.” – Alex Morrison
Now celebrating its 24th global edition and 19th year in Canada, Glenfiddich’s Artists in Residence program is regarded as one of the world’s most distinguished residencies. It welcomes hundreds of applications annually and offers artists the rare chance to live and work in the Scottish Highlands, surrounded by Glenfiddich’s timeless traditions and rolling Speyside landscapes.
“Glenfiddich is proud to support creativity and craftsmanship within Canada’s vibrant arts community,” says Navneet Bhullar, Marketing Manager for Glenfiddich in Canada. “We can’t wait to see how Alex Morrison brings his vision to life at our distillery.”
Applications for the 2026 Glenfiddich Artists in Residence program will open in December 2025.
