From peat to poetry: raise your glass with these exceptional single malt Scotch selections for Burns Night
It’s not like we ever really need a reason to enjoy a dram (or two) of Scottish single malt whisky. That said, each year, on January 25th, it’s practically a duty for whisky aficionados to pull the stopper, pour a measure, and raise a toast to the late Scottish poet Robert (Robbie, Rabbie, or however you choose to spell his name) Burns.
Whether you opt to go “all in” with the kilt, pipes, and haggis, or choose a somewhat more “meditative” way to honour the man, scotch whisky simply has to be a part of the ritual.

With this in mind, we’d like to offer a few selections for your consideration. Perfect companions for a Burns Night celebration that will linger in your memory as warmly as the Scotch in your glass. (All prices are for Ontario listings).
Ardbeg “The Ultimate” 17 Years Old
This legendary expression is a throwback to Ardbeg’s roots. Delicate peatiness dances alongside floral, mineral, and soft, sweet undertones. Perfect for a toast to tradition. ($320)
Bowmore 12 Years Old
Not as overtly peaty as some other Islay malts (see above), but nonetheless smoky, briny, and with a character that defines the Bowmore style – at once powerful and assertive, yet surprisingly gentle, with distinct sweet citrus fruit and chocolate flavours intermingled amongst the muscle. ($76)
Glenfarclas 15 Year Old
The flagship of the Glenfarclas lineup, this malt offers up notes of buckwheat honey, hay, subtle smoke, butterscotch and vanilla on the nose, leading to a honeyed, slightly spicy, caramel-tinged palate that lingers on the long, memorable finish. ($175)
Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban 14 Years Old
Finished in port casks, this is a velvety masterpiece, offering up notes of Turkish delight, dark chocolate, and tangerines, with a bold finish of mint chocolate and Seville orange. It’s a perfect pairing for any Burns Night feast. ($118)
Glenmorangie Lasanta 12 Years Old
Another “cask finished” dram (this time in sherry oak). Rich and robust, this Highland Single Malt blends warm aromas of leather, toast, and nuts, with a full-bodied palate of hazelnut and citrus. The long, sweet finish is an ode to indulgence. ($109)
Laphroaig Quarter Cask
This expression begins its maturation in ex-bourbon barrels before being transferred to small quarter casks. The result is a whisky offering up aromatics of peat-tinged fireplace embers with hints of coconut and banana as well as the characteristic Laphroaig punch and power. The long finish hints at smoke and gentle, slightly sweet baking spice. ($110)
